Aki On The DL

From : It was announced today that Akinori Iwamura, the Devil Rays Third Baseman, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right oblique strain. Jorge Cantu has been called up from Triple A Durham to replace him on the roster.

I'm guessing that Aki strained his oblique late in last night's game against the Yankees. He caught two difficult pop-ups in foul territory, one over-the-shoulder and one in which he leaned into the stands. Or, he could have done it early in the game when he made a diving stop on a hard-hit ground ball. In any case, the Devil Rays will miss his glove for a few weeks, along with his bat; he's ninth in the AL with a .339 average.

Cantu was batting .267 in Durham, with 5 doubles, a triple and 8 RBIs in 19 games. He wasn't thrilled when he was demoted to Durham before the start of the season and suggested that he wouldn't report to the minors. I'll bet he was in St Petersburg faster than anyone could say Michael Johnson.
