Milledge's Bad Rap

Today comes the news that yet another professional athlete has tried his hand at rap music. Lastings Milledge, the Mets outfielder, has entered this arena with his new record label, Soul-ja-boi Records. His first song? "Bend Ya Knees."

The sexually-explicit song uses the N-word, bitch and "ho," and the lyrics include "a different bitch for every night." The Mets have distanced themselves from Milledge's musical exploits, issuing this statement: "We disapprove of the content, language and messge of this recording, which does not represent the views of the New York Mets." On top of that, New York City Councilman Leroy Comrie (D), who had previously sponsored a resolution condemning the use of the N word, is up in arms about the record: "He's lost his mind...I don't understand how he could, in the spirit of Jackie Robinson, put out music that's so vile, using...some of the worst words in music."

After I read the first part of the article that the link above leads to, I thought, These people are crazy! This isn't news at all. It's not the first time a rapper has used sexually-explicit lyrics. Then I got past the middle of the article and learned that Milledge had been expelled from his Christian high school in 2003 for having sex with a 15-year old girlfriend. Prior to that he'd been accused of having consensual sex with 12 and 13-year-old girls. Houston, we have a problem.

Milledge is currently on the DL right now and is in Florida rehabbing a sprained ligament in his right foot. Maybe the Mets should consider adding psychotherapy to that rehab program. Otherwise we might hear in the near future that Milledge has done something far worse than making a rap album or having consensual sex with minors.
