July 7th Is Old Timers Day

Next Saturday the Yankees will hold their 61st Old Timers Day at Yankee Stadium. This year's theme will be the 30th anniverary of the team's 1977 World Championship. Members of the '77 team who are scheduled to appear include Reggie Jackson, Ron Guidry, Graig Nettles and Chris Chambliss. They'll be joined by Yankee greats Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Don Larson and Bobby Murcer, as well as other popular Yankees, including Oscar Gamble, Rich "Goose" Gossage, Bill "Moose" Skowron and Mickey Rivers.

Diana Munson, widow of Thurman Munson, Helen Hunter, widow of Catfish Hunter and Billy Martin, Jr will also be in attendance.

After the festivities the current-day Yankees will take on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

In case you were born yesterday, you should know that Old Timers Day at Yankee Stadium is truly like no other. The Yankees were the first team ever to hold such an event and, with their long and illustrious history, it's always a star-studded occasion.

I'll be in attendance next Saturday, my first Yankee game in almost two years. I'm looking forward to it and I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but I think it's going to be somewhat bittersweet, seeing all those Yankee greats running onto the field, being reminded of good times gone by and wondering if I'll see good times again in that building, which will be no more after next season. I don't know what will happen in the next year and a half, but for one day at least, I'll be able to say, "Let the good times roll!"
