A Piece of Garbage

Here's something for your circular file: Today on Mark Feinsand has a piece up about comments made by the scout of an opposing Major League team. Speaking with anonymity, the scout said, "I don't think they can pull out of this. I don't think there are enough players on this club to do it." He likes Jeter, A-Rod and Posada, and feels that Cano can come around but, other than that, there's no one else on the Yankees for anyone to fear. They have no bench, they haven't drafted well and Melky Cabrera is "vastly overrated." He even went so far as to call Bobby Abreu (.228, 2 HR, 22 RBI) a piece of garbage.

I wouldn't go so far as to use the word garbage, but I'd say this scout is right on the money. Unless they make a deal or two very soon, the Yankees don't have the players to pull out of this.

So who was the scout? I don't know, but I"ll bet I know what team he scouts for. When the Braves were making their run in the '90s, the Yankees had scouts who did nothing but watch Braves games. It was their whole job. The article mentions that the scout has seen a lot of Abreu and can't figure out what's wrong with him. I believe this scout is from a team who believed the Yankees were going to be a top rival this season. Only a few teams would believe that and, I think, only one team would go so far as to use the word "garbage," even if it was on the condition of anonymity. Yep, the scout in question works for the Boston Red Sox.
