You Can't Control Gary Sheffield

"Where I'm from you can't control us. You might get a guy to do it that way for a while because he wants to benefit, but in the end, he is going to go back to being who his is. And that's a person that you're going to talk to with respect, you're going to talk to like a man...These are things my race demands."--Gary Sheffield

According to ESPN Sheffield made these comments in an interview published in the current issue of GQ Magazine. He believes Latin players are not like this; they are easier to control, and that is why they are MLB's most prevalent minority.

As inflammatory as Sheffield's latest comments are, I don't totally disagree with them. As an African-American I understand his demand for respect in a predominantly white environment. But his belief that this is the reason there are more Latin players than black players in baseball is completely asinine. Sheffield is from Florida. I'm sure he grew up playing side-by-side (or, at least, against) dozens of Latino children. He knows how popular baseball is in Latin America. What he's saying is absolutely ridiculous. It's been said before and it'll be said again after I say it here: Gary, shut up and play!
