What's The Real Deal With Steinbrenner?

It is now obvious that George Steinbrenner is in poor health. Or, is he? With the recent news about the possible sale of the YES Network came comments about him not being lucid at all times. Now, a good friend of his is confirming it.

According to the New York Post, Tom McEwen, who visited Steinbrenner recently, talked to Conde Nast's Portfolio Magazine. According to the article, written by Franz Lidz, Steinbrenner said "Good to see ya" to every question McEwen asked him. Lidz, who accompanied McEwen on his visit, also wrote "His body is bloated; his jawline has slackened into a triple chin; his skin looks as if a dry-cleaner bag has been stretched over it . . . His features seem frozen in a permanent rictus of careworn disbelief."

Very sad, indeed. But there's something I don't understand. Why would Steinbrenner's family allow him to be put into this situation? According to Michael Kay, they didn't. Tom McEwen, who is 84 years old and in a wheelchair, was "helped" to Steinbrenner's house by Lidz. Steinbrenner had no idea Lidz was coming to his house. When McEwen introduced Lidz as a writer, Steinbrenner chose to say "Good to see ya" in answer to every question, rather than letting Lidz be privy to anything he had/wanted to say. Unbelievable!
