Right City, Wrong Team

Well, most of the "experts" were right about a New York team being in the playoffs this year. They just weren't right about which team. When the season began just about everyone picked the Mets to be the NL World Series representative and just about everyone picked the Yankees to miss the playoffs entirely. You can't blame them. The Mets had a 7-game lead with 17 to play. They needed to win only 2 of their last 7 games, which were all against bad teams, to get into the playoffs and they couldn't do it. The Yankees, on the other hand, were 14.5 games out of first place in May. They were written off by just about everyone. Everyone, that is, except themselves.

What the Mets have done (or, failed to do) is being called the biggest collapse in baseball history, but I can't help thinking about how the Yankees collapsed in the 2004 ALCS, losing the series after leading 3-0. Yeah, it's worse if the collapse happens during the regular season, but I also think that the "experts" have short memories.
