Like Sugar, Game 2 Is Sweet

The World Series features the best players in the world going after one of the most prestigious prizes in all of sports. Only about 700 men are blessed with enough talent to even have the slightest reason to believe that their Fall Classic dreams can become a reality. For AJ Burnett and the Yankees last night, reality got a little better, as they won Game 2. I am sure it was sweet as sugar.

Sugar is also the name of a feature film that looks at the other side of the pro-baseball spectrum: the guys who never make it past rookie and A ball. I've been wanting to see this movie ever since it came out last year. This week I finally got the opportunity.

The 2009 World Series Preview

The Yankees will face their toughest opponent this postseason when they face off against the Philadelphia Phillies tonight at the new Yankee Stadium.

How do these two teams stack up against each other? Here's a preview:

These Are Not The 2004 Yankees

Ladies and gentlemen, meet your 2009 American League Champions, the New York Yankees:

After the Yankees won the ALCS last night 4 games to 2, it was pretty clear that these are not your 2004 "choke's on us" Yankees. Actually it was clear before that, but for Yankee fans, it probably was hard to see the proverbial forest for the trees.

Kevin Long Interview: LockerBlogger.com

I received an email yesterday promoting a new sports site called LockerBlogger. It's a sports social networking site. Pretty cool. Anyway, they wanted to tell me about an interview they did with Yankee hitting coach Kevin Long.

It's a good interview. Long talks about how different each player on the team is, how his approach for one player might not be the same as it is for another player. Also, his answer to the question of who he thinks would make a good hitting coach one day is pretty interesting.

Have a look:

Angel Stadium: Where No Yankee Lead Is Safe

Last night the Yankees played their last game at Angel Stadium for the year 2009.  The West Coast Chamber of Horrors has been closed down until next season (as far as the Yankees are concernesd. It remains to be seen whether the Phillies will set foot inside.).

With the exceptions of that last regular season series and giant trump card CC Sabathia, the Yankees never seem to get ahead against the Angels in Anaheim.  Just about every single time they get a lead at Angel Stadium, be it early in a game or late, they lose it.  Last night was a microcosm of life for the Yankees in La La Land.

Luckily, for the Yankees and their fans, the next game (and the one after it, if necessary) will be at Yankee Stadium. I'm pretty confident that they will take one of the next two games, but if they want to have a decent chance in the World Series, they need to win the Satruday game, Game 6. Otherwise, CC will need to pitch Game 7, which means he will not be available for Game 1 of the Fall Classic.

Go Yankees!!!!!!!!!

I Want To See CC Go Yard In The World Series

CC Sabathia, with help from Alex Rodriguez, has put the Yankees up 3-1 in the ALCS, one win away from the World Series. This is so exciting! It's exciting not only because he'd pitch in the Fall Classic, but there's a chance he could hit a home run.

He could do it. He has three career home runs. Here's the link to one of them:

Joe Girardi: All Guts, No Glory

The man's got guts. That's for sure.  Joe Girardi has at least that going for him.

Yesterday, Girardi removed a perfect David Robertson with two out in the 11th inning in favor of Alfredo Aceves. We all know what happened after that. The Yankees got beaten at their own walk-off game.

Yanks Head To Disney Up 2-0: Is It A Small World, After All?

Thanks, in part, to miscues by the thought-to-be fundamentally-sound Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Yankees head to Anaheim up 2-0 in the 2009 ALCS. Andy Pettitte will be on the mound, trying to give his team a commanding 3-0 lead. If they win, I hope they'll be no fooling around by Joe Girardi. Just plug CC Sabathia in for game 4, Joe,  and wrap the darn thing up.

LATB Poll Results: If Rush Limbaugh Bought The New York Yankees

The results are in!

The Rush Limbaugh Poll ran on two sites, this one and Bleacher Report. Both "precints" reported similar results. A total of 50 people voted in both polls, the answers breaking down as follows:

1. Continue rooting for the Yankees- 31 votes
2. Start rooting for another team- 9 votes
3. Stop folloing MLB- 10 votes

Frankly, I'm a little shocked. Personally, I could never root for a team Rush Limbaugh owned, Yankees or not, even if he were only a minority owner. But my heart would always remain with the Bronx Bombers, so I could never start rooting for another team.

Next post: An ALCS update.

The 2009 Walk-Off Wins: All 15 Of Them

I heard a broadcaster say that the actual phrase "walk-off win" is attributed to Dennis Eckersley. Eckersley called the pitch he threw to Kirk Gibson, which led to that famous homerun, his walk-off pitch. He called it that because, he said, "After I throw it, I walk off the field."

There were 15 of those pitches thrown at the new Yankee Stadium during the regular season this year. See all 15 of them in this great YouTube video:

If Rush DID Own The Yankees: Another Blogger Counts The Effects

A big shout-out to the folks over at IT IS HIGH, IT IS FAR, IT IS...caught for their hilarious response t0 the Rush Limbaugh Poll. They've posted a tongue-in-cheek look at how things would be with Rush at the Yankee helm. Here are just a few of the "changes" that he'd make:

1. Black catchers won't receive such fawning, preferential media treatment.

2. Injured players receive finest pain-killers money can buy, from doctor of their choice.

3. Instead of Jeep, the Yankees Radio Network driven by CompuServe.

2009 ALCS: Series Preview

After an almost excruciatingly long lay-off, the ALCS will finally begin tomorrow night at Yankee Stadium, weather permitting. The coming rain storm will likely lengthen what was already being thought of as a long series. The schedule-makers will have their hands full trying to reschedule games for this ALCS.

Looking past Mother Nature, the series breaks down like this:

LATB Poll: What If Rush Limbaugh Wanted To Buy The New York Yankees?

Rush Limbaugh has been dropped from a group of investors seeking to buy an NFL franchise. When I first learned that he was part of this group I wasn't sure what to think. I'm not much of a football fan, so it was hard for me to form an opinion on the matter. But then I started to think about it terms of baseball, and it was much easier to decide.

How about you? What would you think if Rush Limbaugh was part of a group of investors who bought the New York Yankees? Assuming you are a Yankee fan, would you continue to root for the Yankees? Would you start rooting for another team? Voice your opinion by voting in the poll near the top of the left sidebar.

Happy voting...

Carl Pavano Finally Helps Yanks (No, Not Really)

On Saturday I heard a radio talkshow host joke that, in his upcoming ALDS start, Carl Pavano might finally help the Yankees in their quest to win a championship.

He was right!

Well, not exactly.

Okay, So Maybe I Was Wrong: A-Rod Hits Again

I had to work last night so I relied on my Blackberry to find out what was happening in Game 2 of the ALDS. When I checked it shortly after 9:00 PM the Yankees were trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the 8th. I checked again, shortly after 9:30 and it was tied at 3 in the bottom of the 11th. When I checked once again, a few minutes later it was over, a 4-3 final in favor of the Yankees.

Right away I wondered who had provided the heroics. Who was the hero of the game? Who got the pie in the face? I couldn't search my phone for that info, lest I be written up or, perhaps, fired. So, I waited until I left the store and, on my way to the subway I checked, and began to think: Okay, so maybe I was wrong about Alex Rodriguez.

A-Rod Gets 2 Hits: Will He Get More?

Going into last night's game against the Twins, Alex Rodriguez could not get a hit with runners in scoring position if his life depended on it. After his second at-bat you could hear the boo birds coming to life, but he silenced them the third time he came to the plate, hitting a single to left-centerfield, scoring Derek Jeter. He later got a second RBI-single, once again plating The Captain.

The Second Season Begins (With An Apology)

As the playoffs begin today I'm realizing that my last post was more than a week ago! My apologies to everyone. It was unavoidable, mainly because of a stint in the hospital.

I'm feeling a lot better now and looking forward to writing a post tomorrow about tonight's game against the Twins and Yankees.
