Fans Running Onto The Field: Scary Possibilities

Last night at Yankee Stadium someone ran out onto the field during the Twins-Yankees game. Just as other TV networks do, the YES Network cameras did not show the jerk in action. They instead kept their focus on the Yankees, who were in the field at the time. A few seconds into the distraction they zoomed in on CC Sabathia, standing on the mound, watching security trying to catch the idiot. I'm not a mind reader, but it seemed to me that CC was nervous and not too far removed from that deer-in-the-headlights look.

Perhaps I'm coming from left field with this one. I'm sure that some of you reading this have probably already come to that conclusion. But I can't help wondering about it. I can't help wondering how any player feels when something like that happens. A wild-looking stranger is only several feet away from them. They don't know if this person is armed and/or whether he/she will try to attack them, which actually happened to a Royals first base coach several years ago.

I don't know for sure, but this must be in the back of every player's mind: Some crazy fan might come running onto the field and.... I can't finish the sentence, but you know what I mean. I just hope the day doesn't come when we have to finish that sentence.

To the Yankees and every other team in professional sports: Stay safe.
