When You (Phil) Hughes, You Lose?

Tonight the Yankees go or a split in their 4-game series against the Minnesota Twins. Good luck with that, guys. The starter tonight, as you may know, is Phil Hughes. Hughes' stats to-date:

W-0, L-2, IP 8, ERA 9.00, H 13, ER 8, BB 4, SO 11

Other than the strikeouts, Phil Hughes hasn't done squat since he earned the number 3 spot in the Yankees rotation at the end of Spring Training. Will he ever? Many believe the answer to that question is no. They believe the Yankees ruined him when they made him a starter, then made him a reliever, and then made him a starter again. I'm not so sure about that.

What I do know is that Hughes will be facing a Twins lineup that is finally potent again, with the newly healthy Mauer and Morneau flanking Josh Willingham. Thinking about this doesn't give me much hope about this game. It is entirely possible that the bullpen will be busy again tonight. It has been taxed so much lately that, when LF Brett Gardner was put on the DL last night, the Yankees called up a pitcher (Cody Eppley) to replace him on the roster. Want to bet Mr Eppley makes his Yankee debut tonight?

Be ready to score lots of runs, tonight, Yankees. You're going to need them.
