Nova Pitches Yankees Into First Place

This Daily News back page is misleading for anyone who didn't see last night's Yankee game. Ivan Nova pitched 7 scoreless innings en route to the Yankees 3-0 win over the Braves, but his bat had nothing to do with it.

Nova got his first Major League hit, a single that might have been a double had a position player hit it. But Nova made it only to first base and was left stranded when the next batter, Derek Jeter, failed to get on base.

So Nova was a hit on the mound last night and, as a result, the Yankees are now in a first place tie with Tampa Bay. Remarkable, considering that they are still not hitting well with runners in scoring position (1-8 last night), or with the bases loaded (11 LOB last night). They are also still 0-12 in games they don't homer in. Unacceptable.

First place is nice, especially when you're there when the regular season ends. But going into the postseason with numbers similar to the ones above will make for yet another first-round exit. It's not early anymore. Let's get this party started, guys.
