Godzilla Designated For Assignment

I was listening to yesterday's Yankee game on the radio when I heard the news that 2009 World Series MVP Hideki Matsui has been designated for assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Matsui, who is 38 years old, has had an excellent 10-year Major League stint and a sensational 10-year career in Japan before that. It looks as if his career is over. Very sad. But it's not that sad. Baseball has been very good to Hideki Matsui, and he'll be able to retire in style.

His former Yankee teammates had nothing but good things to say about him yesterday. Someone who was not his teammate also had good things to say about him: Ichiro Suzuki. Rumors have been swirling for years now that the two Japanese superstars dislike each other and never speak. Jon Heyman tweeted the following the other day:

someone should ask matsui what he thinks of ichiro as a yankee. the 2 NEVER spoke when teams met.

Whether that is true or not, Ichiro took the high road yesterday:

"He obviously played a long time here at the Yankees. Obviously, he had to play well for a long time and was consistent, but not just as a player.
"I know that as a human being and as a person, you have to be a good person to last with the Yankees that long. That's really what I think highly of him for, just the consistency and the fact that he was able to be here for such a long time. That tells that he's a great player and a good person."[]

Very well said, Ichiro. I wish nothing but the best to Hideki Matsui wherever he goes and whatever he decides to do.

Bye bye, Godzilla.
