Sabathia's Slump Prompts New Criticism About His Weight

In an article I read over a year ago CC Sabathia talked about his ongoing struggle to stay at a healthy weight.  I no longer remember the particulars about the article and I don't have the exact quote from CC but, to paraphrase, he said something to like this:

"When I'm pitching well, I'm a good size. When I'm not pitching well, I'm too big."

CC has not pitched well this season. There has been talk about his elbow still hurting and his velocity going down. His latest loss, last night to the Tampa Bay Rays, finally brought the weight critics out. Early this morning on WFAN radio here in New York, he was portrayed by the host and callers alike as having gained a ton of weight this season, and that it, more than anything else, was the reason he has pitched so poorly.

But is this really accurate? I don't think so. Maybe it's just me. Maybe I have blinders on, but I don't think CC Sabathia has gained any weight this season. He lost weight last off-season and, as far as I can tell, he has kept that weight off.

CC Sabathia might be fatigued. He might still be injured. Or, he might just suck right now. But take it from someone who's lost nearly 50 pounds this year: he hasn't gained a ton of weight.
