Friday Thoughts On Ichiro, Stub Hub, Etc.

So it appears that Ichiro Suzuki will return to the Yankees in 2013.  Reports are circulating that he will receive a two-year deal in the neighborhood of $12 to $13 million.

That much money and years for a 39 year old. Sounds like a mistake. The only way it can work is if the second year is not guaranteed. It should be a team option. But I guess that is easier said than done when you are negotiating.

The Yankees, of course, want that second year in the hopes that Ichiro will get his 3,000th career hit in pinstripes. They're looking to turn it into a marketing bonanza.

Marketing bonanzas appear to be all the Yankees are interested in these days. They're thinking of making money off of Ichiro's potential milestone, and they're also looking to make more money as a result of opting out of the new Stub Hub agreement. Putting the best possible team on the field isn't as much of a priority anymore for the New York Yankees. Neither is being fan-friendly.

But being fan-friendly hasn't been a priority for the Yankees since 2009. So, there you go.

Don't get me wrong. I think the Yankees can still win in 2013. The question is, win what?

Other notes:

* Good luck, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. You'd better hope Josh Hamilton stays clean for the life of the contract you just gave him. Better yet, you'll be lucky if he stays healthy and doesn't quit on you.

* The winner of this week's NYY Fragrance Giveaway will be chosen tonight. Click here for details on how to enter.
