Zoilo Almonte Off To A Nice Start With The Yankees (With Sterling HR Call)

I never pay much attention to prospects in the Yankees farm system, and pay no attention to those who aren't even thought of as such. Zoilo Almonte falls into this second category so, I have always acted as if he were virtually non-existent.

Imagine my surprise these last three games in which Almonte made appearances, including last night's game, his first Major League start. This non-prospect has gone 4-6 with a home-run, along with playing a nice left field.  He really is a welcome surprise after watching Vernon Wells go 9 for his last 90. If Almonte can sustain it, we may have seen the last of Wells as the starting leftfielder.

The home run came in last night's game. It was a blast to right, landing in the Yankees bullpen. He got the ball back and he got the works, meaning, a unique home run call by announcer John Sterling.

Did you hear the call? I won't repeat it. I'll let you watch and hear for yourself (starting at 0:36). Click here.

What do you think? I've heard worse. In any case, congratulations, Zoilo Almonte. Here's hoping there's a lot more to come.
