Ichiro 4,000: A Celebration, Then A Move Up In The Standings

It was great to see Ichiro Suzuki get his 4,000th career hit at home, in Yankee Stadium, in front of the hometown fans. I was in the process of leaving work during the historic moment, however, and had to settle for hearing it on radio.

John Sterling did not disappoint. He was his usual outrageous self. In case you missed it, listen to it here.

I liked what manager Joe Girardi said after the game:  That he himself didn't have 4,000 career hits even if you included little league.

Last night wasn't a little league game, of course. It was another game the Yankees needed to get them back into the playoff picture. With the 4-2 win over Torontothey are pretty much there, sitting 4 games back in the Wild Card standings.

Moving forward, it's safe to assume that Mr 4,000 will play a big part going down the stretch, since it looks as if the games the Yankees will play will meaningful if nothing else.

Congratulations, Ichiro.
