Yankees Eliminated: More Painful This Year Than Last Year

When the 2014 Yankees season began, not making the playoffs for the second straight year was the furthest thing from my mind. After all, this was a team that had won 85 games in 2013 with journeymen like Jayson Nix and farmhands like Zoilo Almonte.  Now, with such additions as Brian McCann and Jacoby Ellsbury, it seemed a shoe-in that they would surpass that mark and return to October Baseball.

However, after losing yesterday to the Baltimore Orioles, they did, indeed, not make the playoffs for the second straight year, and while both failures are disappointing, this latest one is more painful.

You could blame 2013 on injuries.  Big name players (i.e. Jeter and Teixeira) were out of the lineup for an extended period of time.

You can't blame 2014 on injuries.  The players who were on the shelf (pitchers like Tanaka, Nova and Sabathia) were replaced with ones adequate enough to do the job.

In 2013 things were beyond the Yankees control. In 2014 they have no excuse.  That is why it hurts more than it did last year.

The only thing left now is to try to have a winning season. The Yankees need to win one more game in order to accomplish that.  Weather permitting, they can do it tonight, when they give The Captain his Stadium sendoff.
