What Signing Yoan Moncada Could Mean For Rob Refsnyder

Now that James Shields has, reportedly, signed with the San Diego Padres, there are no more big-name free agents left on the board. However, if you count the international free agents, there is one: Yoan Moncada.

With reports circulating that the Yankees are one of his suitors, it is easy for fans to salivate at the thought of Moncada taking up residence at second or third base for the team.

Not so fast, Yankees Universe.

Because of his age (19) and lack of experience, Moncada is listed as an amateur free agent. If the Yankees sign him he won't automatically be penciled onto the 25-man roster. Moncada would likely begin his career on the farm. Granted, it would be at a high level, but it would be on the farm nonetheless.

On the other hand, let's assume Moncada is all he is cracked up to be. Let's say he flies through the system and makes his MLB debut before the All Star Break. If that happens, there is the question of what will happen to another high-end prospect: Rob Refsnyder.  With Stephen Drew at 2B, Chase Headley at 3B and Chris Young and Garrett Jones alternating as fourth outfielder, we can all kiss 2015 goodbye as the year Refsnyder makes his Major League debut.

Then again, another year of seasoning for Refsnyder might not be so bad, and a spot should open up for him on the roster for sure in 2016.  If that spot isn't open, he would become--and I hate even to think about this--an extremely valuable trade chip.

Whether it's Refsnyder's or not, Yoan Moncada should find a landing spot soon.
