In the Yankees 6-3 win over the Blue Jays last night, Mark Teixeira went 1-4, hitting a 2-run homer with two RBI's and a run scored. This, after Joe Girardi's pre-game announcement that his 1B had a minor lat issue.
Before all of this, Teixeira was hit in the wrist by a pitch during the team's previous series in Boston. He missed no time at all after this injury, and was replaced only for defensive reasons late in the series opener in Toronto.
Yes, this is Mark Teixeira I'm talking about. Mark Teixeira, who seemingly always assumes the worst. If he has a hang nail, he thinks his finger is broken. This is the same guy who actually said he just can't play everyday anymore.
Who knew that going gluten-free would lead to being so tough-minded? Just kidding. What likely happened is that someone sat down with him and told him he had to start sucking it up. Or, perhaps he, himself, realized that if he really wants to be a team leader, as he has expressed, he has to set a better example.
Whatever the case may be, Mark Teixeira is finally acting the way he should have been acting for the past two years. The Teix Messages are great but, in the long run, this new attitude might be even better.
Keep it up, Mark.
