Super Nova Lights Out In Return To The Yankees

Before I met up with Christina to watch the return, in person, of Ivan Nova, I couldn't help wondering which Nova the Yankees would get yesterday: Super Nova or Ivan The Terrible. Before we even arrived at the great seats Christina had scored, I was leaning towards Ivan The Terrible. But Nova pleasantly surprised me, giving up no runs on three hits in 6.2 innings, en route to the Yankees 10-2 win over the Phillies.

After the game Twitter was filled with tweets that included #SuperNova. As I read through them I smiled and nodded in agreement. Until I came to this one:

Really? After several doctors told Tanaka he didn't have to?  Even though his ligament tear is nowhere near as severe as Nova's was? Despite the fact that he is in no pain right now?

Statements like these are premature. They are of the same ilk as the ones made when the Yankees were 3-6, and when Didi Gregorius was playing like the worst shortstop in the history of baseball. Just because Nova was lights out yesterday doesn't mean that he'll go undefeated for the rest of the season. Just look at Matt Harvey. He's had his ups and downs since returning from Tommy John Surgery. Ivan Nova will, too.

For now, though, we can all enjoy the warm fuzzies from yesterday's great start. Congratulations, Super Nova, and best wishes for the rest of the season.
