Back on April 1st, when Christina, Pete and I gave our season predictions for the New York Yankees, things looked rather bleak. My contributors did their best to be optimistic, each predicting the second Wild Card. I, myself, was more pessimistic, stating that the Yankees would miss the playoffs for the third year in a row.
Well, the season isn't over yet, but if things continue the way they are going, all three of us will be proven wrong. The Yankees have a 5.5 game lead in the AL East, and most "experts" agree that the division is now the Yankees' to lose.
We could ask how this happened but, everyone knows. Besides Ellsbury and Gardner at the top of the lineup, and Betances and Miller at the back of the bullpen, there are those two guys in their mid and late 30s whom everyone left for dead at the end of last season: Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez.
Their numbers speak for themselves:
Teixeira is hitting .256 with 24 HR and is tied for the league lead with 65 RBI. In his last seven games he is hitting .400 with a .464 OBP.
A-Rod, who some believed wouldn't make it out of Spring Training, is hitting .275 with 20 HR and 54 RBI.
I cannot believe that anyone is more surprised about Teixeira than I. I expected nothing from him, and a lot from his sub Garrett Jones. As for A-Rod, I didn't care how well he played, I just wanted him gone. Now I'm behind them both 100%, and I look forward to more contributions from each.
April 1st is, of course, April Fools Day. The Yankees are doing their best to negate those predictions my contributors and I made that day. I'm sure I speak for all three of us when I say that looking like fools suits us just fine.
