Yankees Hope Remaining Games Will Be Lucky 13

Winning three out of four is always a good thing.  But sometimes it's like settling for a split. That was the case this weekend against the Orioles at the Stadium. The Yankees pretty much split with the Red Sox, with each team winning two of three Friday through Sunday.

There's not much time left now. Sure, the Yankees are still in the AL Division race mathematically. Three games out with 13 to play. They begin with a showdown with the Twins, holders of the second Wild Card. The stretch also includes six games with the Blue Jays, three of which are in Toronto. Include three against the Rays and a makeup game against the Royals and it adds up to 13. No matter where these teams sit in the standings, they're all tough to beat.

The Red Sox, on the other hand, start a series with the Orioles tonight in Baltimore. They move on to Cincinnati this weekend, then close out their regular season at home against the Blue Jays and the Astros. The only potential problem I see for them is Houston. Though the Astros have clinched the West, they are still playing for best record. If the Yankees are still close that weekend and best record hasn't been clinched, it could be a really wild weekend. Let's hope for it.

If not, it's the AL Wild Card Game. Will it be at Yankee Stadium? Or, will it be at Target Field (or, some other ballpark)?  Wherever it takes place, it looks like Luis Severino is lined up to pitch in it. That, thanks to Joe Girardi shuffling the rotation to keep CC Sabathia from pitching on the turf in Toronto.

Was CC really an excuse? Are the Yankees giving up on the division and concentrating on the Wild Card?  Perhaps they are concentrating on the Wild Card at this point, but giving up sounds too harsh. I believe they still want to win the division. They are just being realistic at this point.

Beat the Twins.
