Yankees Win 3rd Straight Series, Keep Division Hopes Alive

To borrow from YES analyst Ken Singleton, they did it the hard way.

Friday night's devastating loss to the Rangers had me holding terrible thoughts in my head. Though I could understand Joe Girardi's reasoning behind his bullpen management that night, it was hard to defend him, and I found it hard to believe that the race for the AL East wasn't over.

A new day began and, enter Luis Severino. If there's anyone left out there who's still hesitant about calling him the Yankees' ace, go somewhere and hide, please. Sevy did just what an ace is supposed to do after a tough loss. He gave his team a chance to win their third-straight series the next day.

What a next day! Eighteen hits, including two home-runs each by Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge. Think Judge is all the way back? Well, I don't think anyone can get all the way back to a first half like the one he had, but he certainly appears to have put the worst behind him.  After all that has happened, Judge still leads all AL rookies in HR, RBI, BB, OBP, OPS, and runs scored. Hopefully he can add to those numbers in the  remaining 20 games.

So, going into today, the Yankees have a 3.5 game lead on the Twins for the first Wild Card, and trail the Red Sox by 3.5 games in the division.  The Tampa Bay Rays will host the Yankees at Citi Field starting tonight, while Boston hosts Oakland and the Twins welcome the Padres.

Go, A's. Go, "Pahds." Go Yankees.
